Make magazine, launched in February 2005 as the first magazine devoted to Tech DIY projects, hardware hacks and D.I.Y. inspiration, has been hailed as a how-to guide for the opposable thumb set and Popular Mechanics for the modern age. Itching to build a cockroach-controlled robot, a portable satellite radio or your very own backyard monorail? Hankering to hack a game boy or your circadian rhythms? Rather read about people who fashion laptop bags from recycled wetsuits and build shopping cart go-karts? Make is required reading. Now, following on the heels of Make's wildly popular inaugural issues, O'Reilly offers Makers, a beautiful hardbound book celebrating creativity, resourcefulness and the D.I.Y. spirit. Danica Sue Patrick's racing dream started at ten years of age when her babysitter told her about Go-Karts. From her first ride around a Go-Kart track, Danica was a natural. A racing phenom was born. By age 12, Patrick had won her first Grand National championship in karting. She would go on to win two more titles and 10 regional crowns before making the jump to Formula Cars. Danica's big break came in the 2000 Formula Ford at historic Brands hatch in England when she finished second. It was the best finish by an American driver, ever. Danny Sullivan, the 1985 Indy 500 winner and Indy Car Champion, had the previous American record with a fourth place finish in 1974. Danica returned to the U.S. in 2001 and asked her friend Bobby Rahal for a job. Rahal hired Danica and she drove for him for two years in the Toyota Atlantic Series. Then came Danica Mania in 2005. In May 2005, Danica got the attention of the racing world by running the fastest laps at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in preparation for the Indy 500 -- the first woman to do so since the race's inception in 1911. She qualified fourth, became only the fourth woman to race in the Indy 500, led the Indy 500 with less than 10 laps to go and finished the illustrious event with an impressive fourth-place finish. A week later she found herself on the cover of Sports Illustrated. This book celebrates the fantastic 2005 racing season with a selection of amazing photography.
